A Walk to 39 Steps Falls and the Arboretum

June 12, 2026 · by Anne Scheffer

If you only do one walk while you’re staying at Maylodge, make it this one — it’s easy, it’s free, and it packs in a botanical garden and a waterfall in about fifteen minutes.

The walk starts on Oak Avenue, right next to the Village Green, and winds you through the Hogsback Arboretum — a “living museum” of trees gathered from around the world, each one labelled with its common and scientific name. Keep an eye out for the Californian Redwood, over a hundred years old.

The path leads you gently down to 39 Steps Falls, a pretty cascade tucked into the forest — a lovely spot to pause, breathe in the mountain air, and take a photo or two.

Good to know

  • Free, and open during daylight hours
  • Very easy walking — suitable for most fitness levels and families
  • About 15 minutes each way from Oak Avenue
  • Feeling more energetic? The trail continues on to Kettlespout Falls, a longer and more challenging route
