For guests who want a bit more of a mission than the walk to 39 Steps, the hike out to Kettlespout Falls is the natural next step.
The trail begins at the Arboretum in central Hogsback — the same starting point as the 39 Steps walk — and continues on past it to a bluff with a view over the falls. It’s a proper hike rather than a stroll, and it’s best suited to reasonably fit walkers who don’t mind a longer route through the forest.
The waterfall gets its name from what happens on a windy day: the spray is caught and thrown by the wind like steam from a kettle spout, which is quite a sight if you catch it at the right moment.
Good to know
- Free, and accessible during daylight hours
- Starts at the Arboretum on Oak Avenue, next to the Village Green
- About 2 hours to Kettlespout, per the trailhead signage — longer and more demanding than 39 Steps (±30 min) or the Circular Walk (±1.5 hrs). Pace yourselves and wear proper walking shoes
- If you’re up for even more, the trail continues on to Hobbiton at around 2.5 hours
- Best combined with the 39 Steps walk if you want to make a full morning of it
